From October 2002 to September 2005, the crew of the USS San Francisco (SSN 711), a nuclear fast-attack submarine, took an incredible and gut-wrenching journey through three homeports, two missions vital to national security, two dry-dockings, dozens of leaders, and the worst submerged grounding in the history of the US Navy that did not result in the loss of the vessel.

The author's journey as a young Naval Officer took him through the best and worst of these times, and his story carries lessons for military officers, leaders, and managers everywhere.

Making a Submarine Officer A Story of the USS San Francisco SSN 711 (Audible Audio Edition) Alex Fleming John N Gully ACF Consulting Services Books

This is a story of a Junior Officer on the San Francisco prior to her accident and on into the yard at Puget Sound eventually. By some quirk of fate (taking exam for Eng) he was not on the boat when she hit the sea mount and for which Kevin Mooney paid the ultimate price (relief and retirement). I knew Keven when he was XO of a SSBN and later as a diplomat for the Navy in London and his PCO assignment. I met both he and his wife on their trip east to another assignment prior to the London trip.

The author has very high praise for most of the 5 COs that he served under. But if such a term as a sea-daddy were to apply to officers, then Kevin was the author's sea-daddy. The help he received from the officers and CO was instrumental in shaping the career of the author. The constant testing, qualification, material problems, drills, schooling, field days, certifications, and concerns were all things I also took part in during my eight year stay in submarines.

The author mentioned Joe Ashley, the one person who died from the accident, and a Chief Danny Haggar. Danny is a frequent visitor to the submarine BBS systems that are available. I have talked with Ashley's father on several occasions.

I could wish the book were longer because I didn't want it to end. The investigation of the accident was not given in detail but this might have been removed by officials is my guess. The question of correct charts will remain a mystery also. A book I will definitely read again because the pictures of the boat with it's crushed bow will live with me forever.

I never give a book 5 stars. Only Silent Victory, Thunder Below by Adm. Fluckey are worthy of five but this is an exception.
Thanks for the great read.

He had very high praise for Kevin and for 3 of the other 4 CO's he served with. He mentioned Joe Ashley and Danny Haggar a lot in the book as well as Capt. Mark Ginda (form CO of SubBase/Groton) and others.

In a rare book by an officer, that seldom mentions enlisted men, this book was filled with Petty Officers by name and many Chiefs.

If you have a Kindle it is only $2.99 and the bargain of the year. It is not a huge/many page book but well written, entertaining and educational from a point of view that we seldom see.

Making a Submarine Officer A Story of the USS San Francisco SSN 711 (Audible Audio Edition) Alex Fleming John N Gully ACF Consulting Services Books Reviews

I really enjoyed this book! Fleming personalizes a story that could have been dry as toast. One gets the feeling of just how intellectually demanding it is to prepare for, and then to act as a submariner. I spent five years in the Navy, and two years in an ROTC program. Although my experience had nothing to with subs, it taught me a lot about "the Navy culture" -- which is much the same for all sailors. There were many times that something may not have been done in a certain way that was anti-policy, even though it may have just "made too much sense." It may take one years of experience to realize why some of those seemingly inexplicable "policies" are in place. The author melds his journey through that culture & tells how it shaped him into a successful officer. At the same time his journey was enormously readable -- interesting, heart breaking, and even funny sometimes. Just a note about the Edition I'm not sure whether the print edition of this book had a photo insert, but I think that would have been a great idea. Many of the books that I like to read are non-fiction, history, etc. Even though I love reading on my I really miss it when the folks don't include the photos/maps/etc that may have been published originally.
I had the privilege to experience submarine life as both enlisted and as an officer.

What Mr Fleming describes brought back many memories of life onboard a submarine. I appreciate how brutally honest he is/was about himself....the hallmark of a true leader and a trait that is essential to success in any field (in my opinion).

A couple nits. San Francisco was not the first submarine drydocked in Guam. Many a "5 for Freedom" were drydocked in Guam back when the Polaris boats were forward deployed out of Guam....I got to experience an emergency drydocking on the R E Lee back in 76 and there is an iconic submarine photo of the George Washington sitting in drydock in Guam.

The book could us an editor....there are a fair number of errors in the book but nothing that takes away from the overall flow.

Well Done.
When I recount my days as a Nulcear Navy JO, my friends think I must exaggerating. Fleming's account gave me chills as it triggered memories I had pushed back years ago. When you are a submariner, you belong to the Navy. You will work long hours and go months without a day off. There is nothing in civilian life that can compare save for what doctors in training go through during their internship.

Fleming does not hold back when he tells about his troubles during this tour. He is brutally honest about them. His story should be required reading for PCO's because it shows what a difference a good CO can mean for a command. The contrast between Captain Lovpock and Captain Mooney is stark and this shows in the results they achieve.

Fleming describes accurately how the Submarine Force chews up JO's. In doing this they drive some superb talent outof the Navy into the civilian workforce. This is sad because it costs north of a million dollars to train each JO. Remember this The author had to clear this through the Navy reviewers in Public Affairs, the Submarine Force, and Naval Reactors. This must have caused him to water down some of his accounts. His real world was even harder than he describes.
